I was invited to participate into the competition for Open-Air Sculpture by the Notojima Glass Museum in1991.  When I visited for the first time to check the location for my sculpture to be installed and looked down into the expanse of sea glittering far below from the hill,  I instantly came up with the image of KITAMAEBUNE  in my mind. The trade by KITAMAEBUNE,  nothern-bound sailing ships,  brought the prosperity to the regions on their shipping route from Hokkaido to Osaka during the periods of Edo to Meiji.  There were many people who enjoyed the prosperity on Noto Peninsula.  お日様を追って丘にのぼった。眼下にひろがる 海原がぎらぎら眩い。北の物産を積み光の中を 音もなく進む小さな帆船。北前船だ！・・・ 能登島ガラス美術館建設に連動する野外作品コンペに 指名され、能登半島の入口、七尾湾に浮かぶ能登島の 現場を見に行った時のこと。海を一望してたちまち 作品の構想が決まった。風になびき、ふわーっと 拡がった光が、海面をするするーっと滑るように・・・ 舐めるように・・・渡っていく・・・光は船・・・ 江戸時代に蝦夷地と関西方面を結ぶ海路の主要な 拠点として交易で栄えた能登半島の商家や町並みの ゆったりした風情を、既に四半世紀前の旅で知っていた。 「光航-ひかりがわたる-」は光と航海のイメージを 結びつけた新造語。
