The original title in Polish ‘Pora umierac’ might be

well translated into English ‘It would be  better to die’.

Both the title in Polish and ‘The time to die’ in English

version sound comical and seriously ironic.

The words in those titles rather celebrate the happy

ending of the old heroine who lived up to her beliefs

with full of conviction.  Having wanted desperatly to

preserve her house and its natural surroundings

just same as they have been even after her death,

she could finally defeat her son who was forging

secret deal with a real-estate agent to sell her land.

映画と向いあった後では、「死ぬ方がまし」や

「死ぬとき」という一瞬ドキッとさせられた

タイトルの方がむしろ、人間に対する作者の眼差しの

暖かくも複雑な陰影を感じさせ、主人公の老女の

内面を生々しく立ちあがらせる。つまり、

題名は最後の瞬間まで独力で生き自己の信念を

貫くことを志した堅固な精神とその

「倖せな終り方」への賛歌であり、同時に、

そのような母の想いや積み重ねられた「生の記憶」

などに関心なく勝手に損得勘定に走る息子と

その取り巻きたちに対する、辛辣なアイロニーと

なっている。柔らかいユーモアとサラッと決断する

凛とした潔さ。してやったり、と余裕たっぷりに

不敵な笑みを浮べたのは作中の老女か、

作者である女性監督か。
