Around forty years ago or so,  there was

a trend that titles of the foreign movie films

were freely translated and added the word

‘love’ to any cases.  For instance,

‘The night Porter’ was replaced with 

Storm of Love’ in Japanese,  and

‘Carnal Knowledge’ is ‘Hunter of Love’. 

In case of ‘The Night Porter’,  the original title

seemed to be much more appealing to me in

suggesting something heavy behind the porter’s life,

although the story had severe expression of

stormy love.  Anyway,  I actually went to the cinema

because of my interest in  the female director,

Liliana Cavani. On the other hand,

‘Hunter of Love’ might not be too wrong,  I suppose.

七〇年前後か、邦題に原題にはない「愛」を

やたらとつけていた一時期があった。

邦題と見終わった後の印象との相違が最も大きく、

英語題をそのままカタカナで表記してほしいと

思った作品としてすぐに思い浮ぶのは、

イタリア映画「愛の嵐」（英語題：The Night Porterは

イタリア語原題からの直訳）。文字通り激しい嵐が

通り抜けたのはどす黒い深淵の底に堆積していた

記憶の中だ。原題のナイト　ポーター

（ホテルの夜間玄関番。通常ポーターはホテル入口の

扉の陰に立ち、客の荷物をフロントまで運ぶ人）の方が

背後の闇を想像させ作者の意図を明確に伝えたのでは？。

私が出かけて行ったは、その作者、まだ数少ない

女性監督への興味からだったけれど。
