In the days when information resource was

limited and  word-of-mouth reputation

didn’t spread as fast as today,  any of movie

distributors made of strenuous efforts to find

the proper title in Japanese effective enough to

build their audiences.  It could be easily

imagined its box office flop,  if ‘The Night Porter’ were

released under the Japanese title literally translated.

Since then,  later more than a decade,  begining to

think about the issue of aging or nursing care

seriously,  I had wonderful encounter the Australian

film,  thanks to the Japanese title

‘An Old Woman’s Tale’,  instead of

the original ‘A Woman’s Tale’. 

情報源が限られ、クチコミも今日のような

速度で拡がらず、外国語に対する免疫も

まだ不十分な時代、どの配給会社も観客動員の

鍵として題名に腐心していた。

原題からの直訳「ホテルの夜間玄関番」では

客を呼べなかっただろう。その後、時を経て、

五十歳を過ぎ老いについて考えはじめた頃、

映画「ある老女の物語」に飛びついた。

日本人全体がまだ福祉や介護などに関して

問題意識が低く、社会制度も未整理だったため、

配給会社は悩んだ末に原題の「ある女の物語」に

あえて「老」を加えたのだと、後に知った。

原題のままなら多分、死に向う老女と介護者の

爽やかな関係を通し、人間の在り方を

問いかけるこの素晴らしい映画に、

出会うことはなかっただろう。
