Although their main themes and styles of

expressions are completely different from

each other,  the hiroines of both

‘A  Woman’s Tale’ and ‘The Time to Die’ were

commonly old women coming close to

the end of life.  D. Szaflarska, playing

the heroine of ‘The Time to die’,  was

ninety-three years old when the picture was

taken.  Captured mostly by close-ups of

her face,  vivid and compelling expressions in

her eyes were just excellent.  In spite of

the stories of these films being supposed

to be terribly depressing under ordinary

circumstances especially in Japan,

the directors did very well in making

the films liberated from the heaviness. 

主題も表現方法も全く異なるが、死の足音を

敏感に感じ取った女の、毅然として清々しい姿を

見せている点で共通する「ある老女の物語」と

「木洩れ日の家で」。後者の主役シャフラルスカは

撮影時九三歳ぐらい（作中の女性は息子と

孫の様子から推測すれば八十歳前後だろう）。

犬を相手に話すのはほどんど独り言に等しく、

顔のアップ、特に目の表情だけで魅せる演技が

印象深い。二作品とも、本来なら暗く

重苦しくなりがちな状況を明るく軽やかに

描ききっているのは監督の感性や技術の問題以前に、

明確な個人意識とその集合体である社会との関係の

中で育まれた成熟した人間観によるものだろう。

たかが映画されど映画、己に注がれた他者の

視線にもなり得るのだ。
