It isn’t extraordinary nowadays that persons at

the age of ninety-three still play main rolls actively.

It might have been amazing more than

two decades ago,  however,  that actresses of

ninety-three and of seventy-nine years old

played the heroines of a film.  That was

‘The Whales of August’ starring Lillian Gish and

Bette Davis as sister.  They showed powerful

presence and their mode of behavior had

never lost the glory of the big stars.  It was a short

while earlier than the time turning the aging

society so fast as people got heightened

awareness of health and quality of life,  along with

the advancement in medical science.

近年では九三歳現役と聞いてもあまり

驚きもしないが、二〇年以上も前の「八月の鯨」は

驚愕の対象だったといえるだろう。

名女優の誉れ高いリリアン ギッシュと

ベティー デーヴィスを見に出かけたのだが、

今改めて確認すると、当時リリアン九三歳、

ベティー七九歳。詳細は忘れたが、美しい海を

前に淡々と過ぎていく時間のなかで姉妹を演じる

二人の存在感が際立ち、そのかくしゃくとした

立ち居振る舞いには揺るぎないスターの誇りが

染み出していた。そこにいるのはれっきとした

現役の人間で、「老人」と括るのは失礼だと思えた。

急速な高齢化と共に医療研究も高度化し、

若返りには食事だ運動だと世の中が喧しくなる

少し前の話ではあるけれど・・・
